Three Car Sounds You Should Worry About

When your car is well-maintained, the only sound coming out of it should be the hum of the engine. If your car is squeaking, grinding, or making other strange sounds whenever you go for a drive, it’s probably time to see a mechanic. With that in mind, here are three car sounds you should worry about.

Crunching

If you hit the brakes and hear a distinctive crunch, almost like driving on fresh snow, you have a serious problem. It means your pads are so worn down that your brake disc and brake caliper are grinding together. Not only will grinding brakes damage your vehicle, but they make it more difficult to slow down, which could lead to a serious crash.

If you ever hear crunching when you slow down, you need to replace your brakes ASAP!

Hood Hissing

If you hear a snake-like hiss from the front of your car, you probably have a leak. There are many kinds of leaks, but each has the potential to damage your vehicle and put you in danger. For example, a damaged gasket could cause oil to leak into your manifold, potentially causing a car fire. Likewise, a coolant leak can lead to an overheated engine and cause a grey fog to plume out of your hood.

If you hear a hissing sound or see a stain on the ground where your car was parked, you should probably take your vehicle to the mechanic.

Flap Flap Flap

If your car makes an “flp flp flp” sound, it might mean you either have a flat tire or a problem with your fan belt. Don’t risk driving on a flat tire! It’s better to replace it with a spare or call a tow truck as soon as you realize something’s wrong.

If it’s not a flat, you may want to take your car to a mechanic. A damaged belt or another undiagnosed issue could cause serious problems later on that could increase your chances of causing a crash.

As a car owner, it’s crucial you understand what these sounds mean and fix them as soon as possible. If you’re ever in a crash, the other driver’s insurance company may try to use these maintenance issues against you, even if you didn’t cause the crash.
