A collision between a semi-truck and a minivan on the morning of Friday, Oct. 30, left two Milwaukee men injured in the town of Oak Grove, in Dodge County, Wisconsin. According to the Dodge County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded around 6:43 a.m. to County Road A, south of County Road S.

Preliminary findings indicate that a maroon 2027 Chrysler Pacifica, traveling northbound on County Road A, crossed into the southbound lane and collided with a southbound 2025 Freightliner semi-truck. The Pacifica's driver, a 26-year-old Milwaukee man, was taken by emergency medical personnel with injuries described as non-life-threatening. A 42-year-old Milwaukee man riding as a passenger suffered serious injuries and was flown from the scene by Flight for Life. The semi-truck driver, a 38-year-old man from Oshkosh, was not injured.

Authorities closed northbound Interstate 41 at State Highway 28 and sent drivers onto Highway 28 during the emergency response. The closure lasted about two hours. Juneau Fire, Burnett Fire, Horicon Fire, Juneau EMS, Beaver Dam Paramedics and Flight for Life responded. Investigators identified several witnesses who gave statements. The sheriff's office has not released the names of those involved, pending family notification, and has not announced any citations or charges. It continues to investigate what caused the Chrysler to cross into oncoming traffic.

What Makes This Incident Different

The report gives a preliminary sequence but no explanation. It says the Pacifica crossed into the lane used by the southbound semi-truck, yet it does not say why. That gap is the central open issue, and it is separate from the description of how the two vehicles met.

The injuries are also only partly described. The passenger was flown out by Flight for Life, which shows how urgent the response was, but the report gives no diagnosis, condition or recovery outlook. The driver's injuries were described as non-life-threatening. The semi-truck driver was not hurt. Because the passenger's outcome has not been reported, it would be a mistake to assume anything about how serious or lasting the injuries may be.

The interstate closure adds a further question. The crash was reported on County Road A, but northbound I-41 was closed at Highway 28 for about two hours. The source does not explain the link. The closure reflects traffic management during the response. It does not show who was at fault or how badly anyone was hurt.

Questions Investigators May Examine

The main question is what caused the Chrysler to leave its lane. Investigators may examine scene measurements, the damage to each vehicle and the drivers' accounts. Information stored in the vehicles may also help, if it exists and is released. The evidence will determine the answer, and the report does not establish one.

Witness statements may also help. The sheriff's office says several witnesses gave statements. Their value depends on where each person was and what they actually saw of each vehicle before impact. Recorded statements or the final crash report may clarify whether they match the preliminary findings.

The I-41 closure may be explained by statements from the sheriff's office or the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. That question concerns the emergency response, not fault.

Evidence That May Need to Be Preserved

These are categories of records that could exist. The report does not say that any of them has been obtained.

  • The official crash report and any scene diagrams or measurements. Preliminary findings place the Pacifica in the southbound lane, so these records may show where on County Road A the vehicles met and came to rest.
  • Witness statements and identifying details. Several witnesses have already spoken to investigators, and their accounts may show what each vehicle was doing just before the collision.
  • 911 and dispatch records. These may show when the crash was reported, which agencies were sent, and what led to the closure of northbound I-41 at Highway 28 for a crash on County Road A.
  • The maroon Pacifica and the Freightliner, left unaltered until documented. Because the reason for the lane crossing is unexplained, their condition and any stored vehicle data may matter. Repairs or disposal could remove that information.
  • Records from the Flight for Life transport and the receiving hospital. The passenger's injuries and condition are unreported, so these records, which he or his family may choose to share, would be the clearest account of what the crash caused.

What Families Should Know

The sheriff's office has not named those involved and has announced no citations or charges. That leaves families with limited public information. Preliminary findings can change as the investigation continues, so it helps to keep notes of what you are told and by whom, and to ask for copies of reports when they are released.

When a loved one is flown from a scene with serious injuries, the full medical picture can take time to emerge. Keeping hospital paperwork, bills, follow-up appointments and notes about work and daily limits can help show the effect of the injuries later.

Because the cause is still under investigation, it is reasonable to think carefully before giving a recorded statement to any insurance representative about how the crash happened. A lawyer can explain how insurer contacts are usually handled. Time limits can apply to injury claims and depend on the circumstances, so asking early is wiser than assuming there is plenty of time.
