Lathrop, MO – One Killed, One Injured in Two-Vehicle Crash on Hwy 33 Near Lathrop

Lathrop, MO (October 23, 2025) – A tragic crash on Highway 33 just north of Lathrop claimed the life of one man and injured another on October 22.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the accident happened around 5:15 p.m. on Wednesday. A 2000 Toyota Camry, driven by a 55-year-old man from Lathrop, was heading south when it crossed the centerline into the northbound lane. At the same time, a 2014 Volkswagen Passat, also driven by a Lathrop resident, was approaching a curve and tried to swerve away.

Despite efforts to avoid a collision, the front of the Camry hit the Passat head-on in the northbound lane. The Camry came to rest in the center of the roadway, while the Passat ended up partially off the road after striking a sign.

The driver of the Camry, who was not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:24 p.m. by the Clinton County Coroner. The 58-year-old driver of the Passat, who was wearing a seat belt, sustained moderate injuries and was transported to Liberty Hospital by Tri-County Ambulance.

Both vehicles were totaled and removed from the scene by Sam’s Towing. Multiple local agencies responded, including the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office, Clinton County Fire Department, and Lathrop Fire Department.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased victim and wish the injured driver a full and speedy recovery.

Head-On Collisions in Clinton County, Missouri

Head-on crashes are among the deadliest types of traffic accidents, often resulting in severe injuries or fatalities. In rural areas like Clinton County, narrow roadways and sharp curves can increase the risk of these incidents—especially when visibility is low or drivers cross the centerline.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), head-on collisions account for only about 2% of crashes, but they are responsible for over 10% of driving fatalities. Factors like distracted driving, fatigue, and failing to wear seat belts can significantly raise the risk of death or serious injury.

When a fatal crash occurs, grieving families are often left with emotional pain and financial burdens. A wrongful death lawyer can help determine if negligence played a role—such as reckless driving, speeding, or vehicle maintenance issues. Compensation may be available for funeral costs, medical bills, lost income, and emotional suffering.
