The crash occurred on Saturday, December 13, just before 10:00 a.m. in the area of Union Ave and Brown Ave. A preliminary investigation showed that Harris was riding his bicycle southbound on Union Blvd when an unknown vehicle hit him.
The impact threw both Harris and his bicycle over a concrete barrier wall. He died at the scene. The vehicle involved fled before authorities arrived, and police have not yet released a vehicle description or identified the driver.
Officials continue working to locate the hit-and-run driver and review evidence in the case.
Our hearts go out to the family and loved ones of Craig Harris, as they face this difficult time.
Bicycle Accidents in St. Louis
Bicyclists face unique risks on busy city roads such as Union Blvd and Brown Ave. Even when riders stay in designated lanes or follow road rules, they remain exposed without the protection that vehicles provide. A collision between a car and a bicycle can lead to severe injuries or death, especially when speed is a factor.
In Missouri, bicycle crashes remain a significant concern. According to state traffic data, hundreds of bicycle-involved collisions occur each year, and St. Louis consistently reports some of the highest rates in the state due to dense traffic, narrow roadways, and high commuter volume.
Urban areas like North St. Louis often see more incidents because of limited bike infrastructure and heavy vehicle congestion. In fact, recent reports indicate that more than 70% of fatal bicycle crashes in Missouri occur on urban roads, where visibility challenges, turning vehicles, and distracted driving create dangerous conditions for cyclists.
Hit-and-run crashes add further harm. When a driver leaves the scene, the victim does not receive immediate medical help. Seconds matter after a serious accident, and delayed treatment can lead to worse outcomes. Families also struggle to cope with the uncertainty of not knowing who caused the crash.
For families affected by a fatal bicycle accident, the emotional impact is heavy. Loved ones may face funeral expenses, loss of income, and ongoing grief. A wrongful death claim may help ease the financial burden by allowing families to seek compensation for damages such as funeral costs, loss of companionship, and lost earnings.
Insurance disputes are common in hit-and-run cases because the driver’s identity may be unknown. However, victims or families may still have options, including uninsured motorist coverage. A wrongful death attorney can help review coverage, gather evidence, and communicate with insurers.
