Kansas City, MO – One Killed, Two Critically Injured in I-70 Crash

Kansas City, MO (February 18, 2026) – A fatal four-vehicle collision claimed the life of one passenger and left two others fighting for their lives on Tuesday evening, February 17. The Kansas City, Missouri, Police Department (KCPD) responded to the scene on eastbound Interstate 70, just east of I-435, at approximately 5:30 p.m.

Preliminary findings suggest the crash began when a silver Nissan Altima, traveling eastbound toward Stadium Drive, failed to stop for heavy traffic congestion. The Altima rear-ended a black Nissan full-size van, triggering a chain reaction involving two additional vehicles.

Tragically, one passenger in the Nissan Altima was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other individuals sustained life-threatening injuries and were rushed to a nearby hospital, where they remain in critical condition.

KCPD investigators are continuing to review the circumstances of the crash.

Our hearts go out to the loved ones of the person who lost their life. And we hope everyone injured makes a full recovery.

What Rights do Families Have after a Fatal Car Accident in Missouri?

Missouri law allows certain family members to file a wrongful death claim to recover funeral costs, medical bills, and compensation for the loss of companionship. Because Missouri is an at-fault state, the family of a passenger or an innocent driver can seek these damages from the insurance policy of the driver responsible for the crash. Getting in touch with a skilled lawyer is a key step.

When a life is lost in a preventable crash, the law recognizes that the family faces both financial and emotional hardships. Families can seek economic damages, which cover measurable costs like funeral expenses, burial costs, and the loss of the deceased person’s future wages and benefits.

They can also seek non-economic damages, which address the loss of companionship, comfort, guidance, and the mental anguish caused by the sudden tragedy. These claims are designed to ensure the financial burden of the loss doesn't fall solely on the grieving family.

In Missouri, the statute of limitations for a wrongful death claim is generally three years from the date of the death. However, it is vital to start the investigation much sooner.

In multi-vehicle accidents, evidence such as witness statements, vehicle black box data, and traffic camera footage can disappear quickly. A professional can help handle the complex communication with insurance companies, allowing the family to focus on their emotional recovery while ensuring that the negligent driver is held accountable for the damage they caused.

A wrongful death lawyer can help grieving families understand what options may be available after a fatal crash has suddenly claimed the life of a loved one.
