The crash happened around 6:45 a.m. The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported that the fatal multi-vehicle crash involved a 2010 Ford Escape and a 2023 Freightliner, both heading west on Missouri 22. The incident occurred when the Ford Escape attempted to pass multiple vehicles. During the maneuver, the Ford struck an eastbound 2019 Kenworth in a head-on offset impact.

The 35-year-old male driver of the Ford Escape was ejected during the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing a safety device at the time of the wreck. The driver of the Freightliner, a 56-year-old man, suffered moderate injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment.
The 46-year-old driver of the Kenworth sustained moderate injuries but declined medical transport at the scene. Emergency units responded and secured the area while assisting those involved.
The investigation into the cause of the collision is ongoing.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family of the victim who passed away. We also wish the drivers who were injured a swift and complete recovery.
Why Head-On Crashes in Mexico, MO Carry Serious Risks
Head-on crashes on two-lane highways are among the most dangerous roadway accidents. Roads like Missouri 22 near Mexico often have limited passing zones, narrow shoulders, and little separation between opposing lanes of traffic. When a driver attempts to pass without enough distance or misjudges the speed of oncoming vehicles, the risk of a severe collision rises sharply. These highways may appear quiet at times, but even a brief error can have serious consequences.
Crashes involving opposing traffic often lead to serious injuries or fatalities because of the combined force of two vehicles moving toward each other. Drivers and passengers may suffer head injuries, chest trauma, broken bones, or internal injuries. In some cases, occupants can be ejected from the vehicle, which significantly increases the risk of death. Fires after a crash can also worsen outcomes, even when emergency responders arrive quickly.
