St. Louis, MO – Fatal Multi-Vehicle Crash on I-70 WB at Bermuda Ave After Car Goes Airborne

St. Louis, MO (February 13, 2026) – A fatal multi-vehicle crash occurred on Friday, February 13, along westbound Interstate 70 at Bermuda Avenue in St. Louis. The incident happened around 1:15 p.m. and involved several vehicles after one car entered the interstate in a dangerous sequence.

Authorities reported that a 2017 Chevrolet Malibu was traveling southbound on Bermuda Avenue when it left the roadway and became airborne. The vehicle then landed in a westbound lane of I-70, continued across traffic, and struck the concrete median barrier.

A 2024 GMC Sierra traveling westbound then hit the driver’s side of the Malibu. The impact caused the Malibu to catch fire, while debris from the crash spread across both directions of the interstate.

Additional vehicles traveling eastbound struck debris left in the roadway. Emergency units responded to assist those involved and assess injuries at the scene.

The 18-year-old driver of the Malibu suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Another driver, a 52-year-old man, sustained minor injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash.

We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased victim. We also wish those hurt a rapid and complete recovery.

How Do Multi-Vehicle Crashes Turn Fatal So Quickly?

Multi-vehicle crashes can become deadly in seconds, especially when vehicles enter highways unexpectedly or at high speed. When a car crosses into active lanes or strikes barriers, it can create a chain reaction that affects several drivers at once. High-speed roads like interstates leave little time for others to react.

These crashes often lead to serious or fatal injuries due to the force involved. Victims may suffer head trauma, internal injuries, burns, or multiple fractures. Fires and debris can add to the danger, increasing the risk for both drivers and passengers in nearby vehicles.

Fatal car accidents in Missouri result from a variety of documented factors rather than any single assumption. Speeding and aggressive driving are frequently cited contributors, as driving at higher speeds reduces reaction time and increases crash severity.

Impaired driving involving alcohol or drugs also plays a significant role in many fatal collisions, and distracted driving. such as using a phone while driving, can divert attention from the road and lead to deadly outcomes. Failure to wear seat belts further increases the risk of death in serious crashes.

Looking at recent official data, Missouri saw a downward trend in traffic fatalities: preliminary figures for 2025 report about 911 deaths on state roadways, down from 955 in 2024 and nearly 1,057 in 2022. That marks roughly a 5 % decline year-over-year and a multi-year reduction in overall roadway fatalities.

Despite this progress, hundreds of people still lose their lives on Missouri roads each year, which highlights the ongoing safety challenges for drivers and communities.

A wrongful death lawyer in Missouri can help review how the crash happened and explain possible legal options.
