Burlington, WI – Kenosha Woman Killed in Head-On Crash on Pine St Near Schaal Rd

Burlington, WI (March 20, 2026) – A woman from Kenosha died and another driver suffered injuries after a head-on crash Wednesday afternoon, March 18, on Pine Street near Schaal Road in Burlington.

The Racine County Sheriff's Office said the accident happened shortly before 4:30 p.m. Investigators reported that a Chevrolet Malibu traveled north on Pine Street when it drifted into oncoming traffic.

Witnesses told deputies that an SUV traveling south attempted to avoid the car. The driver braked and swerved but could not avoid a head-on collision with the Malibu.

The SUV driver, a 61-year-old woman from Burlington, suffered injuries in the crash. Her legs became trapped inside the vehicle after the impact. Emergency crews worked at the scene and safely removed her from the SUV before transporting her to a hospital for medical care.

The Malibu carried two people at the time of the crash. Authorities said the driver was a 31-year-old man from Illinois. His passenger, a 32-year-old woman from Kenosha, suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene.

Medical crews treated the Illinois driver for injuries and transported him to a hospital. Officials later transferred him to Froedtert Hospital for additional treatment.

Investigators said early evidence indicated the Illinois driver showed signs of impairment at the time of the crash. Deputies obtained a search warrant so hospital staff could collect a blood sample for testing. The sample will be analyzed by the state crime laboratory.

Authorities said prosecutors may review possible charges, including homicide by intoxicated use of a motor vehicle and operating while intoxicated causing great bodily harm.

Investigators from the sheriff’s office examined the crash scene and gathered evidence as part of the ongoing investigation. Officials reopened the roadway later that evening after crews finished their work.

Authorities continue to review the crash.

We extend our sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of the woman who lost her life.

Who Can File a Wrongful Death Claim in Wisconsin?

Certain family members may file a wrongful death claim in Wisconsin when someone dies because of another person’s actions. In most cases, a spouse, parent, or personal representative of the deceased person’s estate may bring the claim on behalf of surviving family members.

Wrongful death claims often arise after serious accidents such as head-on collisions, impaired driving crashes, or other preventable roadway incidents. These cases focus on the losses that surviving family members experience after a fatal accident. State law allows eligible relatives to seek compensation for certain financial impacts connected to the loss.

Funeral and burial expenses often become part of a wrongful death claim. Families may also face medical bills if the victim received treatment before passing away. In addition, courts may consider lost income that the deceased person would have provided in the future. This financial support often plays an important role in maintaining household stability.

Families may also experience the loss of household services or guidance once provided by the deceased person. For example, some individuals contributed to childcare, home maintenance, or financial planning for their families. Documentation such as employment records, medical bills, and other financial records often helps show how the loss affects surviving relatives.

Insurance companies usually review several factors when evaluating a wrongful death claim. These may include police reports, witness statements, and medical documentation connected to the accident. Investigators also review evidence related to fault or negligence in the crash.

Legal guidance can help families understand how wrongful death claims work under Wisconsin law. A wrongful death attorney can review accident reports, financial records, and other documents related to the case.
