Columbia, MO – Bicyclist Killed After Being Hit by Dump Truck on Business Loop 70 and Range Line St
Columbia, MO (October 21, 2025) – A tragic collision in Columbia left one man dead Monday afternoon after he was struck by a dump truck near the intersection of Business Loop 70 and Range Line St. According to the Columbia Police Department, officers and emergency personnel responded to the scene shortly after 2:18 p.m. following reports of a serious motor vehicle crash involving a bicyclist and a commercial vehicle.
Authorities confirmed that the victim, identified as 56-year-old Roger Bone of Jefferson City, was riding a bicycle when the collision occurred. Sadly, Bone succumbed to his injuries at the scene before paramedics could transport him for medical treatment. The driver of the dump truck was not injured in the crash.
Officers are interviewing witnesses and working to determine how the crash occurred. The dump truck involved in the collision pulled over near a nearby motel on Range Line St, where police placed tape around both the vehicle and part of the motel’s parking area as part of their investigation.
A tow truck later arrived to remove the dump truck from the area. Police have not issued any citations or arrests at this time, and the investigation into the cause of the fatal crash is ongoing.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Roger Bone during this difficult time.
Pedestrian and Bicyclist Fatalities in Columbia
Crashes involving pedestrians and cyclists are among the most devastating roadway incidents, often resulting in serious or fatal injuries. In cities like Columbia, where busy intersections and mixed traffic create additional hazards, collisions with large vehicles such as dump trucks are particularly dangerous.
According to data from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, dozens of bicyclists and pedestrians are killed on state roads each year. Many of these accidents occur at intersections or along high-traffic corridors where visibility is reduced, and drivers may fail to yield or notice smaller road users. The size and weight of commercial vehicles, including dump trucks, mean that any collision with a pedestrian or cyclist is likely to have catastrophic results.
As Columbia continues to grow and traffic increases along busy routes like Business Loop 70 and Range Line St, city officials and drivers alike must remain vigilant to ensure the safety of cyclists and pedestrians. Simple precautions such as maintaining slower speeds in urban areas, checking mirrors carefully, and giving cyclists adequate space can make a critical difference in preventing fatal accidents.
Victims’ families often face tremendous emotional and financial challenges following a fatal crash. Funeral costs, loss of income, and emotional trauma can create overwhelming burdens. In cases where negligence or unsafe driving contributed to the accident, families may have legal options to pursue compensation through a wrongful death claim. This process can help cover financial losses and provide a sense of accountability for the tragedy.
Establishing liability in these cases can be complex, requiring an investigation into factors such as driver behavior, vehicle maintenance, visibility conditions, and road design. Consulting with an experienced Missouri Wrongful Death Attorney can help families understand their rights and pursue justice on behalf of their loved one.
