Independence, MO – Woman Killed in Suspected Drunk-Driving Crash at MO-291 & Kentucky Rd
(December 28, 2025) – A woman from Kansas City lost her life on Saturday, December 27, following a serious two-vehicle crash in Independence that authorities believe may have involved impaired driving.
The Independence Police Department officers responded to the scene around 9:18 p.m. Investigators determined that a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado was traveling westbound on Kentucky Road when it ran a red light and entered the intersection with MO-291.
At the same time, a 2010 Ford Ranger was traveling northbound on MO-291. The Chevrolet struck the Ford on the passenger side, causing both vehicles to come to rest in the southbound lanes of the highway.
One passenger in the Ford Ranger, identified as 36-year-old Jennifer Jensen of Kansas City, Missouri, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Two additional occupants of the Ford were transported to the hospital with serious injuries. Their current conditions have not been released.
The driver of the Chevrolet Silverado was also taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Police stated that an investigation is underway to determine whether alcohol impairment played a role in the crash. The investigation remains ongoing.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Jennifer Jensen as the investigation continues.
Impaired Driving Crashes in Independence
Crashes involving alleged impaired driving continue to pose a serious risk on roadways throughout Independence and across Jackson County. Major routes such as MO-291 carry steady traffic throughout the day, and when drivers disregard traffic signals, the results can be catastrophic. Intersections are particularly vulnerable areas where even a single moment of impaired judgment can lead to life-changing consequences.
Alcohol impairment significantly reduces a driver’s ability to react, process surroundings, and make safe decisions. In many cases, impaired drivers fail to notice red lights, underestimate oncoming traffic, or respond too late to avoid impact. Collisions that strike the side of a vehicle often lead to severe injuries because occupants have less structural protection, increasing the risk of fatal outcomes.
Missouri law provides a pathway for injured individuals and families who have lost loved ones to seek financial recovery when a crash is caused by negligent or impaired driving. Compensation may include coverage for medical treatment, burial expenses, lost wages, and the emotional losses suffered by surviving family members.
Cases involving suspected intoxication typically require in-depth investigation, including analysis of crash data, eyewitness accounts, and chemical testing. With multiple parties often involved, insurance negotiations can become difficult without legal guidance.
An experienced Missouri wrongful death attorney can help protect victims’ and families' rights by gathering evidence, managing insurance communications, and pursuing full compensation under the law.
