Kansas City, MO – Four Injured in Car and Semi Crash on US-71 Near 19th St

Kansas City, MO (March 18, 2026) – Four people suffered injuries on Tuesday, March 17, after a serious crash involving a car and a semi-truck along US-71 in downtown Kansas City.

Kansas City Police and emergency units responded just before midnight after reports of a collision in the northbound lanes of US-71 near 19th Street. Authorities said the accident involved a Mercedes S55 and a semi tractor.

Investigators reported that the Mercedes traveled north at a high rate of speed before it struck the rear of the semi-truck. The impact caused the semi to rotate across two lanes before it came to a stop on the left shoulder of the highway.

The force of the crash also caused the Mercedes to catch fire in the middle of the roadway. Responders arrived and worked quickly to assist the injured and control the dangerous situation.

Paramedics treated the victims and arranged transportation to nearby hospitals. The Mercedes driver and a front-seat passenger suffered severe injuries and required urgent medical care.

By Wednesday morning, officials reported that the driver remained in critical condition while the passenger remained in serious condition. The driver and a passenger inside the semi also suffered injuries and went to a hospital for treatment, though officials described their injuries as not life-threatening.

Crews worked at the scene for several hours while officers documented the crash and cleared damaged vehicles from the highway. Authorities later reopened the affected portion of US-71 to traffic once the scene was safe.

Investigators continue to review evidence and gather information about the events leading up to the crash.

Our thoughts remain with those injured as they receive medical care and continue their recovery.

Who Pays for Medical Bills After a Crash in Missouri?

After a crash in Missouri, medical bills are often paid through the at-fault driver’s insurance, although other coverage may also apply depending on the situation. Missouri follows a fault-based insurance system, which means the driver responsible for causing the accident typically becomes financially responsible for damages.

When a crash happens, injured victims often seek medical care first and then report the accident to insurance providers. The at-fault driver’s liability insurance may cover medical expenses, lost wages, and other related costs.

However, the process may involve insurance reviews, medical documentation, and accident reports before payments occur.

Car and truck crashes can cause serious injuries that require immediate and ongoing treatment. Victims may experience broken bones, head injuries, back pain, burns, or internal injuries caused by the force of the impact.

In accidents involving large vehicles such as semi-trucks, the risk of severe injury increases because of the size and weight difference between the vehicles.

Medical documentation plays a key role in accident claims. Hospital records, physician notes, and treatment plans help show how the crash affected the victim’s health. Insurance companies often review these documents along with police reports, photographs, and repair estimates when evaluating a claim after a collision.

In some cases, several insurance policies may apply to the same crash. Coverage may include the at-fault driver’s liability policy, the injured person’s uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage, or other insurance protections connected to the vehicles involved. Understanding how these policies work together can take time.

A truck accident attorney can help review accident reports, medical records, and insurance information to explain how the claims process may work after a crash. Legal guidance may help clarify what types of compensation could be available for medical expenses, lost income, and other accident-related losses.
