Kansas City, MO – Woman Killed After Tractor-Trailer Rear-Ends Disabled Car on I-70

Kansas City, MO (February 22, 2025) – A woman lost her life on Saturday morning, February 21, in a collision involving a tractor-trailer on westbound I-70 near Walnut Street.

According to the preliminary investigation, a Hyundai was stopped in a travel lane due to a flat tire. Police noted that the vehicle's hazard lights were not activated at the time. A tractor-trailer, which was attempting to merge into that lane to pass another truck, struck the rear of the stationary Hyundai.

The impact caused catastrophic damage to the car. The female driver of the Hyundai was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she was tragically pronounced deceased.

The driver of the tractor-trailer remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators.

The Kansas City Police Department is continuing to review the crash.

Our hearts go out to the loved ones of the woman who lost her life.

What can I do if a family member is killed in a commercial truck accident in Kansas City?

After a commercial vehicle accident, the priority should be ensuring that the truck's digital data is preserved and seeking legal professional help to navigate the unique requirements of a commercial vehicle claim.

Commercial trucks are equipped with Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs) and "black boxes" that record speed, braking patterns, and even how long the driver had been behind the wheel. However, this data can be overwritten or lost if not secured immediately. A lawyer can send a "spoliation letter" to the trucking company, legally requiring them to save all digital evidence from the moment of the crash on I-70.

Because this was a fatal accident, the local police department will likely perform a detailed reconstruction. This report will be much more in-depth than a standard citation. It will include measurements of skid marks, the "point of impact," and final rest positions of the vehicles. Obtaining this report is essential for your family to understand exactly how the merging maneuver led to the collision.

Trucking companies usually have aggressive legal teams and high-limit insurance policies designed to protect their interests. By contacting a lawyer, you ensure your family has an equal advocate. A lawyer can handle the intense negotiations with the trucking firm’s adjusters, ensuring that they account for the full financial and emotional impact of your loss. This allows you to focus on your family while your representative handles the heavy burden of the legal investigation.
