Kenosha, WI (November 28, 2025) – A devastating apartment fire in Kenosha late on November 27 claimed the lives of three young siblings and left their father hospitalized with smoke inhalation, according to local authorities.
The fire broke out just after 10:30 p.m. at a multifamily apartment building near 43rd Avenue and 52nd Street. When police and firefighters arrived, they found the structure fully engulfed in flames.
Three children were inside the apartment at the time of the fire. Two of them were pronounced dead at the scene. One was airlifted to a hospital by Flight for Life but later died from her injuries.
The children’s father, identified by family as Joshua Kannin, was also inside the apartment and was taken to the hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation. His current condition has not been released.
The Kenosha Police and Fire Departments are continuing to investigate the cause of the fire.
Our hearts go out to the Kannin family and all those affected by this heartbreaking tragedy.
Apartment Fire Fatalities in Kenosha
Apartment fires, especially those that happen overnight, can have catastrophic outcomes. The heartbreaking Thanksgiving night fire in Kenosha that claimed the lives of three young siblings is a devastating reminder of how quickly these emergencies can turn deadly. In multi-unit housing, where multiple families live in close proximity, fire safety and prevention are critical to saving lives.
In Wisconsin, fatal residential fires continue to be a serious issue. This is particularly true in older apartment complexes that may have working smoke detectors but lack modern fire prevention systems like sprinklers or fire-resistant building materials. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), most fire-related deaths occur in homes without properly functioning smoke alarms or with inadequate safety features.
When tragic events like this happen, investigations typically examine the building’s safety systems, the presence and function of smoke alarms, and how quickly emergency services were able to respond. If it’s found that a landlord, property owner, or maintenance provider failed to meet safety codes or address known hazards, they may be held legally responsible for the resulting deaths and injuries.
Families affected by deadly fires may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim, especially if negligence contributed to the outcome. A skilled wrongful death attorney can help grieving families understand their legal rights, conduct an independent investigation, and hold negligent parties accountable. Legal action may help cover funeral costs, emotional distress, medical expenses, and other losses related to the fire.
