Pedestrian Fatalities on Wisconsin Highways

Pedestrian fatalities along Wisconsin’s highways are an ongoing concern for law enforcement and safety officials. While highways are designed for high-speed vehicle travel, emergencies, breakdowns, or collisions sometimes force drivers to stop along the shoulder, an area that can be extremely hazardous for anyone on foot.

According to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT), dozens of pedestrians are killed each year in roadside or highway-related incidents. In many of these cases, victims are struck by drivers who fail to see them in time due to high speeds, distracted driving, or low visibility. Even a brief moment of distraction can have fatal consequences on interstates like I-94.

Families who lose loved ones in fatal pedestrian accidents often face overwhelming emotional and financial challenges. Beyond the heartbreak of sudden loss, surviving relatives may be burdened with unexpected expenses and the long-term impact of losing a source of care, guidance, or income. In these tragic cases, Wisconsin law allows eligible family members to pursue a wrongful death claim against the negligent driver or any other responsible party.

A wrongful death claim can help families recover financial compensation for funeral and burial costs, remaining medical bills, loss of income or financial support, pain and suffering, and the loss of companionship or consortium. While no amount of compensation can make up for the loss of a loved one, taking legal action can provide stability and accountability in the wake of tragedy.

An experienced wrongful death attorney can make a meaningful difference by managing the legal complexities, working with accident reconstruction experts, and negotiating firmly with insurance companies. The attorney’s goal is to ensure that every responsible party is held accountable and that families receive the full compensation they deserve.
