Rolla, MO – Fatal Semi Truck Crash on I-44 Near MM 184

Rolla, MO (January 23, 2026) – A fatal crash involving a semi truck was reported Wednesday evening, January 21, on Interstate 44 (I-44) westbound near mile marker 184, just west of Rolla. One driver was killed in the incident.

The crash occurred around 5:33 p.m. and involved a 2019 Mercedes Sprinter van and a 2026 Peterbilt 579 semi truck, both traveling westbound. Reports from the Missouri State Highway Patrol indicate the rear of the Sprinter van struck the front of the semi truck.

After the impact, the semi truck traveled off the left side of the roadway. The driver attempted to correct, but the vehicle overturned. The 26-year-old male driver of the semi truck was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 18-year-old driver of the Mercedes Sprinter van was not reported injured and was able to leave the scene. Authorities have not released further details about what led to the initial impact.

Emergency units responded to secure the area and document the crash. Portions of the interstate were impacted while the investigation and cleanup were underway.

The crash remains under investigation as officials continue reviewing the circumstances.

We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased victim.

Why Rear-End Crashes Involving Commercial Trucks in Rolla Can Be Especially Dangerous

Rear-end crashes involving commercial trucks can be especially dangerous on highways around Rolla, including stretches of I-44 where traffic often moves at higher speeds. Large trucks require more time and distance to slow down, and sudden traffic changes leave little margin for error. When a smaller vehicle strikes a commercial truck, the impact can quickly destabilize the larger vehicle and lead to loss of control.

Commercial trucks also have a higher center of gravity than passenger vehicles. Sudden steering corrections or braking can cause the truck to overturn or leave the roadway. Once a truck rolls or exits the road, the risk of fatal injuries increases significantly. Drivers may suffer severe trauma even when seat belts are used.

The consequences of fatal truck crashes often extend well beyond the scene. Families may face funeral expenses, lost income, and unanswered questions about what happened. Sorting through insurance coverage and official reports can take time. Speaking with a wrongful death lawyer may help families better understand how claims are reviewed and what options may be available.
