Callaway County, MO – One Dead After Tractor-Trailer Accident on Highway 63

Callaway County, MO (October 15, 2025) – A tragic crash on Highway 63 just north of Jefferson City left one man dead Tuesday afternoon.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP), the accident occurred about a quarter-mile north of Renz Farm Road. The victim, a 68-year-old man from Holts Summit, was driving a 2001 Ford Expedition when he rear-ended the towed unit of a 2019 Kenworth tractor-trailer. The driver of the tractor-trailer, an 82-year-old man from Steedman, Missouri, had entered northbound Highway 63 from Renz Farm Road.

MSHP reports indicate the Holts Summit man was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision. The force of the impact caused the Ford Expedition to stop underneath the trailer, resulting in fatal injuries. Emergency responders pronounced the man dead at the scene. His body was transported to Millard Family Chapels in Jefferson City.

The Kenworth suffered minor damage, while the Ford Expedition was totaled. Traffic was backed up toward the Missouri River Bridge during the response and cleanup. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances of the crash.

Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of the victim during this devastating time.

Highway Safety and Legal Guidance in Missouri

Collisions involving large commercial vehicles, like tractor-trailers, are among the most dangerous types of traffic accidents. Highway 63 in Callaway County carries heavy traffic daily, increasing the risk of high-impact crashes. Rear-end collisions, in particular, often result in severe injuries or fatalities due to the significant difference in size and weight between vehicles.

Seatbelt use is critical for reducing fatalities, yet many drivers are still unrestrained at the time of collisions. Even moderate-speed crashes can be deadly without proper safety measures. Families affected by such accidents may face overwhelming medical bills, funeral costs, lost wages, and emotional trauma.

Drivers in Callaway County are encouraged to practice defensive driving at all times, maintain safe following distances, and stay aware of surrounding traffic, especially near commercial vehicles. Avoiding distractions, obeying speed limits, and remaining vigilant at intersections where large trucks merge or turn can help prevent serious accidents. Roads with high traffic volume, limited visibility, or complex intersections require extra caution, particularly during early mornings, late evenings, or adverse weather conditions. Drivers should also be aware of blind spots around commercial vehicles and anticipate sudden stops or lane changes to reduce the risk of collisions.

Legal guidance can help families pursue compensation when negligence contributed to a crash. Attorneys work with accident reconstruction experts, law enforcement reports, and witnesses to establish liability. Claims may cover medical and funeral expenses, pain and suffering, and lost income. Legal advocates can also provide guidance when roadway design, inadequate signage, or visibility issues contributed to a crash, ensuring all responsible parties are held accountable.
