Memphis, TN – 6-Year-Old Boy Killed in Pedestrian Crash on Whitney Ave

Memphis, TN (March 13, 2026) – A young boy died after a vehicle struck him Thursday afternoon, March 12, along Whitney Avenue in Memphis’ Frayser neighborhood.

Emergency units responded around 3 p.m. after reports of a pedestrian crash involving a child on Whitney Avenue. According to the Memphis Police Department, a Chrysler 200 was traveling westbound when it hit a 6-year-old boy who was in the westbound lane of traffic.

Paramedics arrived and quickly provided medical assistance at the scene. Crews transported the child to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital in critical condition so doctors could begin emergency treatment.

Doctors later confirmed that the boy died from the injuries he suffered in the crash. Officials have not released additional information about the circumstances that led to the accident.

Police identified the driver as Kenyunte Goss. Authorities said the driver remained at the scene after the crash and cooperated with responding officers. Investigators later charged Goss with driving while her license was suspended, revoked, or canceled. Police also charged her under the state’s financial responsibility law in accordance with the mandatory arrest requirements connected to the Ricky Otts Act.

Officials have not released additional details about the events leading up to the accident. The investigation into the fatal pedestrian accident remains ongoing.

We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the child who lost his life in this tragic incident.

How Long Families Have to File a Wrongful Death Lawsuit in Tennessee

In Tennessee, families usually have one year to file a wrongful death lawsuit after a fatal accident. This deadline, known as the statute of limitations, often begins on the date the person died. If a claim is not filed within this time period, the family may lose the ability to pursue compensation through the courts.

Wrongful death cases often arise after serious accidents such as vehicle crashes, pedestrian incidents, workplace injuries, or other tragic events. Tennessee law allows certain surviving relatives to pursue claims when negligence may have contributed to the loss of a loved one. Eligible family members may include spouses, children, or parents depending on the situation.

These claims often focus on the financial impact the loss creates for surviving relatives. Possible damages may include funeral and burial costs, medical expenses related to the injury, and the loss of income or support the person would have provided to the household. Courts may also consider the loss of companionship and other measurable effects on the family.

Documentation plays a key role in wrongful death claims. Families often gather medical records, accident reports, witness statements, and financial information when reviewing the circumstances of the incident. These records help explain the events that occurred and the financial losses connected to the fatal accident.

Tennessee courts review this evidence when determining whether negligence contributed to the death. Investigators, insurance companies, and attorneys may examine crash reports, traffic conditions, vehicle damage, and other factors that could explain how the accident occurred. This information helps clarify responsibility and the damages that may apply.

Families sometimes have questions about how the legal process works after a fatal accident. A wrongful death lawyer can review available documents, explain the statute of limitations, and discuss how Tennessee law applies to the situation. Legal guidance can help families understand what steps may be available during a difficult time.
