Common Causes of Head-On Collisions

Head-on crashes occur when two vehicles moving in opposite directions collide. These accidents can occur when a motorist veers into oncoming traffic, makes an unsafe turn, or goes the wrong way down a one-way street. In the vast majority of cases, head-on collisions are the result of careless, reckless, or negligent driving behaviors.

Some of the most common negligent causes of head-on collisions include:

  • Driving while under the influence of alcohol/drugs (drunk driving)
  • Distracted driving, such as texting while driving
  • Falling asleep at the wheel/driving while fatigued
  • Making an unsafe left turn across lanes of traffic
  • Improper passing, including unlawfully passing over double yellow lines
  • Speeding, including speeding around a blind curve
  • Failing to stop at red lights/stop signs
  • Ignoring traffic signs, rules, and laws
  • Driving unsafely in poor weather conditions

Whenever a motorist acts negligently and, as a result, causes an accident that leaves others injured or, worse, dead, that motorist can and should be held responsible.

How Long Do I Have to File a Claim?

In Wisconsin, you generally only have three years from the date of the accident to bring your car accident claim. If your loved one died as a result of the accident, you only have two years to file a wrongful death claim. This is known as the statute of limitations.

However, it’s always a good idea to act as quickly after the accident as possible, as evidence can be lost over time and proving your claim may become more difficult if months or years have passed.
