Pedestrian Fatalities and Hit-and-Runs in St. Louis County

Pedestrian deaths caused by hit-and-run drivers remain a growing concern in St. Louis County and other densely populated parts of Missouri. Incidents like the recent fatal crash on Natural Bridge Road near Hanley Road highlight the dangers pedestrians face when crossing busy roadways—particularly during evening hours when visibility is reduced, and traffic is still heavy.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol has reported a troubling increase in pedestrian-involved crashes over the last several years. Many of these tragic incidents are linked to negligent behaviors such as failure to yield, distracted driving, speeding, or operating a vehicle under the influence. When a driver chooses to flee the scene instead of stopping to help, the results are not only morally reprehensible but also criminally punishable under Missouri law.

Hit-and-run crashes rob victims of timely medical aid and leave families struggling with both grief and unanswered questions. In these situations, families may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim against the at-fault driver. Legal claims can help cover the high costs of funeral services, medical bills incurred prior to death, lost future earnings, and the immeasurable pain and suffering caused by a sudden loss.

A skilled wrongful death attorney can coordinate with law enforcement, gather evidence, interview witnesses, and help the victim’s family build a strong case. Even in cases where the driver is eventually apprehended, civil claims are separate from criminal charges and can provide much-needed financial relief.
